The Fire-Box Team at SISEF Working Group in Gravina

On May 29 and 30, 2024, the annual coordination workshop of the Wildfire Management Working Group (GDL) of the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF) was held.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Alta Murgia National Park in Gravina in Puglia and saw the participation of numerous universities, research institutes, regional agencies, and operational entities involved in wildfire prevention, forecasting, and active firefighting.

Dr. Mario Elia, professor of Forest Tree Systems at the University of Bari, together with Prof. Raffaella Lovreglio (University of Sassari) and Dr. Simone Scopetani (DREAM Italia), the new coordinators of the GDL, led the workshop and discussed the following topics with participants:

  • Encouraging scientific research on wildfires in Italy by creating a network of researchers to share knowledge
  • Promoting the exchange between researchers and technical professionals on wildfire management topics
  • Supporting the growth of the technical-operational field through actions involving regional and national stakeholders
  • Informing stakeholders about national and international innovations in wildfire management

All research groups involved in the Fire-Box project were present at the meeting, including representatives from the universities of Bari, Milan, Turin, and the CNR of Sassari.
